A Brief History of Department of Agricultural Marketing
 
Marketing plays a pivotal role in all stages of economic development. Marketing starts even before the production decision and sustainability of the production technologies are determined.  Therefore, the role of marketing to increase and sustain agricultural production can not be over emphasized. Since its inception, DAM has been working to establish an efficient agricultural marketing system. DAM has reached its current state after a long a tedious journey.

1934 onwards.......
 
  • The Agricultural Marketing Advisor prepared and submitted a plan to the Government for creating the Marketing Department. Government accepted it and the central and provincial Marketing staff were appointed in 1935
  • The Government of an undivided Bengal, realizing its importance and  potential, placed the Department on a permanent basis in 1943under the Agriculture and Industries Department of the Government of an undivided Bengal. 
  • After Independence, in 1954, the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing was approved by the Government under the Agriculture, Co-operation and Relief Department of the Government of East Pakistan.
  • In 1960, the Provincial Reorganization Committee approved  giving the Directorate manpower at the divisional, district and sub-divisional levels. 
  • In 1982, the Government of Bangladesh re-organized the Ministries/Divisions and Departments on the recommendation of the Committee on Organizational setup headed by Brigadier Enamul Haque Khan. At that time considering the importance, status and functions, the directorate was renamed as Department of Agricultural Marketing.
